Seton Hall 2D Design & Color

Course Description

This course is an introduction to color theory and the elements and principles of design, as well as an overview of how design and color are utilized throughout works of 2D visual art. Development of visual literacy with regard to the ability to construct, interpret and verbalize the concepts involved in image making. Concepts covered will relate to all fields in the visual arts. Examples of fine and applied art will be analyzed using the principles and elements of two-dimensional design and color theory.

Learning Outcomes

Gain proficiency and knowledge with regard to the foundational principles of 2D image making and Color application.

Class Structure

I divided the lessons up into 6 black and white lessons on the principles of design and 7 color lessons on the elements of art. I wanted to make sure I could really ground the students in traditional 2D Design training, then begin to venture out into more adventuresome expression with fundamental skills in place. My mission is to have students create several projects so they leave with no excuse–they have made art and can make it again!

Black & White Studies

In order to truly appreciate the power of black and white, we developed stamps and used then to push how evocative they could be.

Paper Work to Build Creativity

We used Bauhaus exercises to build a real knowledge of paper, then expanded that into creating tunnel books. I love the way we can transform a single sheet of paper into a 3D structure in mere moments!

The Personal as a Medium

I worked to find novel ways to get students to speak about their personal relationships with color. One particularly successful project was Personal Tartans, woven out of paper.

Color Work

Once the class had built confidence, I asked them to delve into the work of Yayoi Kusama, frottage, and surrealistic collage.

Brunetti Method Comics

I have found that priming students to sequential art through the use of the Brunetti method of cartooning is a huge boost!

Stop Motion Animations

During the pandemic, I found that stop motion animations were a wonderful way to get students excited about sequential art. I continue to find the students produce wonderful work!
